Pak women’s team to skip World Cup: ReportsNew Delhi: The Pakistani women’s cricket team will not be coming to India to participate in the Women’s World Cup beginning January 31.

According to reports in the DNA, this decision is a fallout of the exchange of fire in the LOC between the two countries. The nine Pakistani players who were set to take part in the Hockey India League will also return home.

Earlier, World Cup matches scheduled to be held in Brabourne stadium in Mumbai had been shifted to Ahmedabad due to concerns regarding security of the Pakistani players.

Dhoni`s big hits made all the difference, says Cook

xnew Updated: Tuesday, January 15, 2013,

Dhoni`s big hits made all the difference, says CookKochi: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni`s big hits at the death overs made all the difference which helped the hosts score almost 110 runs in last ten overs, said his English counterpart Alastair Cook.

"It`s too many, last ten overs saw them score almost 110 runs which does hurt. It`s very tough when you`ve got people like Dhoni at the end. You get exposed when you don`t quite get the skills right," Cook told reporters at the post match press conference.

India relied on a brilliant all-round display to thrash England by an emphatic 127 runs in the second one-dayer here on Tuesday.

India first posted a competitive 285, riding on captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni`s 72 and Ravindra Jadeja`s 61, before the bowlers skittled out the visitors for a paltry 158 in just 36 overs to level the five-match series 1-1.

Cook was all praise for Dhoni`s big-hitting prowess and said his late-order surge changed the complexion of the match.

"He (Dhoni) is probably the best player in the world in those situations, in these conditions."
Dhoni sent the pace trio of Steven Finn, Jade Dernbach and Chris Woakes to all parts of the park in the closing stages but Cook declined to introduce the occasional spin of Joe Root which the English skipper said wasn`t an option.

"You`re always going to get a hindsight, but probably one batsman you don`t want an offspinner bowling to is Dhoni. We`ve seen him a number of times and with a spinner at the end, it`s very hard to bowl to him. So, look, clearly when you get hit for 68 runs in the last five overs, you think, maybe now, you could have done things differently. But at the time, for me, it was a very big gamble to make," he said.

Dhoni concedes India lack firepower of past few years

 newUpdated: , January 14, 2013, 09:03

Dhoni concedes India lack firepower of past few yearsKochi: India, on Tuesday finally found its winning touch with a thumping win over England in the second ODI, but captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni conceded that his side did not possess the firepower of the past when they had whitewashed the visitors in the last two series at home.

India had defeated England 5-0 both in 2008 and 2011 ODI series at home but Dhoni said his side would not be that dominant now as they lacked firepower in bowling and the top batsmen were struggling.

"It has happened in the past, but it does not mean it will happen in this series also. We have our own things to worry about. Yes, last time we played well as a batting unit, our bowlers were more experienced, who knew what to do in the powerplays and death overs, how to use the new balls," he said at the post-match press conference.

"We`re going through a stage when we don`t have the same firepower when it comes to the bowling department. Our batting department is not able to convert those starts into a big innings. But we`re fielding really well, and that`s a big positive for us," he said.

Dhoni said his side will have to solve the problem of batsmen failing to convert starts into big totals if they have win matches consistently.

"This is a bit of a problem. If three or four batsmen make 50, then it`s important at least one or two of them go on to make at least 75. So that the new batsmen coming after them, when say two quick wickets fall, then they won`t feel that much pressure.

"I think it`s very important. If you look at the good side, our batsmen are getting starts. Yes, I would like them to convert their starts to a big innings so that it won`t put pressure on the rest," said Dhoni whose 66-ball 72 played a major role in India`s 127-run victory.

Dhoni praised Ravindra Jadeja for his all-round show, scoring a blistering 37-ball 61 not out and two wickets for 12 while bowling.

"It was very important, not only for him but for the team also. Till now if you see, he`s done well as a bowler. He has scored runs, these fifties and forties, but it`s important for him to get these runs going because it eases the pressure on the lower order.

"And we have seen, he`s someone who can hit big sixes. This innings will really help him because, it will help him read the game, where he can hit the bowlers and what the bowlers are looking to do. We`re all really happy with the amount of runs he`s got for the side," said Dhoni.

Dhoni was also pleased with the performance rookie bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shami Ahmed.

"With all these rules everybody will get hit at some point of time. But if somebody is bowling well and you need to get wickets, it`s not a bad option to make him bowl 10 overs. He was swinging the ball nicely, so I said `they are losing wickets and let`s make sure he bowls his 10 overs`.

"And use some of bowlers in the death because they have been doing the same thing quite often and the results have been the same. So we have to look at alternatives," the Indian captain said.

Asked about grooming Bhuvneshwar for serving the country long, Dhoni said, "We need to groom the whole lot, it`s not only about Bhuvneshwar. He is someone who can swing the ball both ways. He is not exceptionally quick but he bowls at a decent pace. He is quite street-smart, he knows where to bowl and what needs to be done.

"With a bit more exposure he can start executing the yorkers well and mix them up with the slower ones. Not to forget Shami. He is someone who bowls at a good pace. So we need to keep going with these guys, back them and give them a bit cushioning so that they become a very good bowlers for us. Considering that our top six-seven bowlers are injured at the moment, these guys are doing a good job."

Ind vs Eng: Hosts thrash England in 2nd ODI by 127 runsKochi: India finally found their winning touch as they relied on a brilliant all-round display to thrash England by an emphatic 127 runs in the second cricket one-dayer here on Tuesday.

information about cricket............

India first posted a competitive 285, riding on captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni`s 72 and Ravindra Jadeja`s 61, before the bowlers skittled out the visitors for a paltry 158 in just 36 overs to level the five-match series 1-1.

It was a convincing and morale-boosting victory for the Indians who have struggled of late even in home conditions, losing the ODI series to arch-rivals Pakistan and the Test series against England.

The hosts did well in all departments of the game, though the batting of the top order continued to be a concern with Gautam Gambhir (8) and Ajinkya Rahane (4) failing to deliver while the form of Virat Kohli remained patchy though he scored 37 today.

It was Dhoni`s 66-ball 72 and Jadeja`s blistering unbeaten knock of 61 in just 37 balls which provided the late flourish to the Indian innings. Suresh Raina (55) and Yuvraj Singh (32), who was distinctly unlucky to be given LBW, were the other notable contributors.

With the Nehru Stadium providing ample assistance to the bowlers in the second half, the Indians exploited the conditions to the hilt to bundle out the visitors with Kevin Pietersen being the top-scorer with a 58-ball 42.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/29), R Ashwin (3/39) and Jadeja (2/12) were the pick of the Indian bowlers to give the hosts a resounding victory in front of a capacity crowd.

The two teams will now travel to Ranchi for the third one-dayer to be played on January 19.

It was rookie Shami Ahmed who gave India an early breakthrough with the wicket of Ian Bell (1) who chased a wide ball which pitched up and swung, only to take an edge to Dhoni in the second over of the England run chase.

As if taking revenge for Bell's wicket, England captain Alastair Cook punished Shami for two fours in the fourth over and Pietersen joined his skipper by carting the same bowler for three boundaries three overs later.

England were scoring at a brisk pace, more than five an over, and Ishant Sharma's introduction in the 10th over did not stop the flow of runs and the pacer was greeted with two boundaries by Pietersen.

Just as England looked like settling down after the initial jolt, Bhuvneshawr Kumar rocked the visitors run chase with a double strike in three deliveries.

Cook, who was looking solid, missed a good length delivery off Kumar, the first ball of the 11th over, and the umpire signalled the dismissal of the batsman. Cook's 17 came from 27 balls and was studded with three boundaries.

Two balls later, Kumar dealt a massive jolt to England innings by taking the wicket of Pietersen with a gem of a delivery. Pietersen was bowled off a sharp incutter which, after pitching at good length, jagged past the inside edge of the batsman's angled bat before crashing onto the wickets.

Pietersen's 42 came from 44 balls and was studded with seven fours.

Kumar returned four overs later to remove Eoin Morgan for a duck with captain Dhoni holding a superb, low catch to his left to leave England at 73 for four in the 15th over.

The quick jolts led England to slow down with Joe Root (36) and Craig Kieswetter (18) trying to consolidate rather than being adventurous and at the halfway mark they were 106 for four with the asking rate shooting over seven an over.

Jadeja returned in the 31st over for a double strike as he removed Root and Chris Woakes (0) in the space of four balls to leave England tottering at 132 for seven.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been struggling for some time, played his part with three wickets in his two overs as he polished off the England tail -- James Tredwell (1), Steven Finn (0) and Jade Dernbach (2).

The visitors lost six wickets in six overs as India won the match with 14 overs to spare.

Earlier, Dhoni continued his rich vein of form to steer the hosts to a challenging total after they were reduced to 119-4 in 26.2 overs.

Dhoni featured in two crucial partnerships --- first adding 55 runs with Suresh Raina and then 96 runs with Ravindra Jadeja for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively.

Middle-order batsman Raina also cracked a well-paced half-century off 78 balls, studded with two sixes and a couple of fours, to initially steady the innings along with Dhoni having come into bat at No 5.

However, it was in the last 10 overs which gave the hosts the impetus as Dhoni and allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, amassed 108 runs, to put the team in a comfortable position after they decided to bat first.

Steven Finn was the top wicket-taker for England as he took two wickets for 51 runs, while James Tredwell bowled really well, taking one wicket for 48 runs.

Jade Dernbach and Chris Woakes were expensive but snapped two and one wicket to contribute to the team.

Earlier, India had a tottering start as they were reduced to 18 for two by the English pace duo of Finn and Dernbach.

Gautam Gambhir (8) and Ajinkya Rahane (4) paid the price for their poor footwork as both were cleaned bowled by Dernbach and Finn respectively.

While, Gambhir failed to defend an incoming delivery from Finn, Rahane tried to play too away from the body, leaving a huge gap which was breached by the inswinger from Dernbach.

Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh then tried to steady the ship and added 53 runs off 65 balls for the third wicket. Raina and Kohli then forged another 48-run stand for the fifth wicket and helped India cross the 100-run mark before the late flourish of Dhoni and Jadeja.

All players responsible for win or defeat, says Gambhir

new Updated: Monday, January 14, 2013,

All players responsible for win or defeat, says GambhirKochi: Opener Gautam Gambhir today backed the under-fire Indian bowlers, saying they alone cannot be blamed for defeats and the responsibility of a result lies with all the 11 players of the side.

India had very expensive last two overs in the Rajkot ODI, where England scored a huge 325 runs and won the match by nine runs.

However, Gambhir said it would be wrong to paint the bowlers as villain as the side prepares for the second ODI, here tomorrow.

"Only bowlers don`t win the match for you. All the 11 players that get on to the field have to do it for you. Whenever the batsmen don`t do well, bowlers cover up for them and vice versa. I don`t believe in blaming one area of the game. I think the bowlers are putting in all the hard work, and the way they won the match for us against Pakistan (in Delhi) was commendable," Gambhir said.

"There has been just one match in this series, and unfortunately the problem here is after every defeat we start talking about form. That`s not the way to look at it, we have to look at a broader picture," the left-handed batsmen said.

Gambhir said there was no need to be harsh on gangly paceman Ishant Sharma and argued that the England bowlers too struggled in the first game.

"I think he has done well in the three matches against Pakistan coming back after such a long time. It’s just the last game that things didn`t go his way. But he is working hard and he has been bowling really well and the results are there for you to see.

"If England scored 325, we managed to score 316. So there wasn`t much difference between their bowlers and our bowlers."

Gambhir, who scored 52 in Rajkot, said good starts have to be converted into big ones but said they were chasing such a huge total in the fist match that they could not avoid playing good shots even in the middle-overs.

"You can`t say as an opener you have to do this and that, we contribute as a team, we play as a team. I think I started off well and one thing is once you get a start you need to continue and get a big one. If one of us had got a big one, results would have been different.

"When you are chasing 325, you have to score at a decent run rate. It`s not like you have plenty of time and keep playing. So ultimately you have to take your chances even in the middle overs. We got four half-centuries in the last match and no one could carry on, if one of us had carried on till 40th over, it could have been different story," he said.

Gambhir also said that media should restrain itself from putting pressure on youngsters such as Bhuvaneshwar Kumar.

"Just let him be what he is. Don`t start tagging him as an all-rounder and people will start talking that he should work on his batting. He is bowling well and if he contributes with the bat as well, it’s going to be a bonus for us.

"You can?t expect Bhuvneshwar coming in at 8 or 9 and score runs, because it`s our job to score runs. It’s not his responsibility. Let`s leave him free and hopefully he will shape up well," he asserted.

Gambhir said it was important for India to not go 0-2 in the series, but they would not put themselves under any pressure by thinking much about the result.

"If we go out there and play up to our potential we are a very dangerous side in our conditions."

The opener said the Kochi wicket was almost like Rajkot but since the outfield is not that quick, it may not be a high scoring game.

BCCI Working committee to meet on Tuesday

 Updated: Monday, January 14, 2013,

BCCI Working committee to meet on TuesdayMumbai: The BCCI`s all-powerful Working Committee will meet here on Tuesday in the backdrop of the Indian team`s recent poor performance against England and Pakistan leading to calls for captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni`s head as well as that of chief coach Duncan Fletcher.

"It`s a regular meeting," informed BCCI sources, though matters like Fletcher`s future as the head coach could come up for discussion with the permission of president N Srinivasan.

At the previous meeting of the committee held on November 21 last year, a consensus could not be reached whether to bring Mohammed Azharuddin back under the parent body`s fold after the Andhra Pradesh High Court lifted the life ban imposed by the BCCI on the former India captain.

"The decision on Azharuddin`s future in BCCI has been deferred. The working committee was undecided on whether to appeal against the decision or not. The legal team is still studying the case and it will still take some time to reach a conclusion," a senior BCCI official had said then.

It remains to be seen whether the Working Committee can come to an agreement on this issue on Tuesday.

According to sources, the WC could decide on the venue of the IPL players` action set for February 3 though other Board sources have insisted that it is for the governing council of the Twenty20 League, headed by Rajeev Shukla, to take a call on the matter.

As per the earlier decision, the auction was to be held either in Chennai or Kolkata this month.

The interesting aspect about the auction would be whether any Pakistan player would be part of it as no player from that country has figured in the cash-rich league after the first edition held in 2008.

Though there have been reports that the governing council is also to meet here on Tuesday, Board sources insisted no such meeting has been scheduled.

Hafeez urges PCB to organise more Test matches

new Updated: Monday, January 14, 2013,

Hafeez urges PCB to organise more Test matchesKarachi: Pakistan`s Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez has urged the PCB to organise more Test matches for the national team as he feels that the players can sharpen their cricketing skills only by playing the longest format of the game.

Speaking to the media ahead of Pakistan`s tour to South Africa at the national stadium today, Hafeez said it was unfortunate that in the last few years, the team had played very few Test matches compared to other countries.

"Last year we played three Test matches against England in January. Than we played three Tests in Sri Lanka in June-July. Now we are going to play the world`s number one Test side (South Africa) after a gap of six months. This is tough on the players," he said.

"We need to play more Tests because I believe players can only develop in this format not through T20 cricket. The two good players we have found since 2010 are Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq and this is because they have done well in Tests," Hafeez, who won the player of the year award at the first PCB annual awards held last week in Lahore for his all-round performances in all formats of the game, said.

Hafeez also heaped praise on Pakistan`s Test captain, Misbah-ul-Haq for the team`s consistent show in this format in the last two years despite some tough situations.

"Misbah-ul-Haq has led the side maturely. And we have had the same nucleus of players in Tests. There has been stability and consistency in selection and that has helped a lot."

Insisting that the players deserved credit for adjusting well to all formats of the game, Hafeez said, "The good thing is our players have been playing international cricket and lot of four-day domestic cricket."

Hafeez said that the tour to South Africa, where they will play three Tests followed by two T20 Internationals and five One-dayers, is going to be a challenging one.

"The tour to South Africa is a big challenge for us because since the last time we went there in 2007, lot of players have changed in the team. And they are now the number one Test side in the world.

"But I am confident we will put up a hard fight because our morale is high after good performances in recent times, most importantly on the tour to India," he said.

Hafeez although admitted that Pakistan were going to South Africa one fast bowler short, he felt that young pace attack was capable of giving a hard time to the experienced Proteas side.

"Pakistani selectors have picked four pace bowlers for the tour, including Mohammad Irfan and Ehsan Adil who are yet to play a Test. But they have decided what is best.

"I think for young pacers like Junaid Khan, Irfan and Adil the upcoming tour is the best platform to establish themselves at the top level," he stressed.

Hafeez said the PCB had done well to schedule the tour in such a manner that the team would go to South Africa 10 days before the first Test, starting on February 1 in Johannesburg.

"That will allow us to adjust, especially the players who have never been to South Africa."

Stating that Pakistan`s trump card in South Africa would undoubtedly be Saeed Ajmal, the T20 skipper said: "He is our best bowler and he will have a key role to play in South Africa. He will bowl a lot of overs there. But then we are confident he can do that since he has shouldered the burden of the bowling for last few years admirably well."
