Sydney Test: Australia beat Sri Lanka by 5 wkts to complete 3-0 whitewash

AUSTRALIA: Overs: 42.5 II Score: 141/5 (Hussey: 27*, Johnson: 1*)

Oh! The anticlimax! Mitchell Johnson was defending everything that was being thrown at him to give Michael Hussey the honour of hitting those winning runs. Johnson played one towards point and gave a look to his partner. Hussey, the unselfish team player that he is, was quick to respond and began his charge towards the strikers’ end. And thus ended the Test career of a much loved cricketer Michael Hussey. Australia have won the Sydney Test by five wickets and completed a series whitewash.

Australia are just five runs away from pocketing this Test and the three-match series 3-0. Chasing a modest target of 141, the home team has lost half of their side but aren’t in a spot of bother since they’re just a big hit away from completing a win. Their chase didn’t begin the way they would have wanted to after losing David Warner in the second over with the scoreboard reading 0/1. However, the target isn’t an imposing one and Sri Lanka would have fancied their chances had they added another 100 to their lead.

With just nine runs to win, Australia have lost another wicket in Matthew Wade. Herath floated one high in the air and Wade went after it attempting a slog sweep. He missed it and the ball crashed on the off stump. He scored 8 (18b, 4X1). In comes Mitchell Johnson.

Ed Cowan was trapped in front by Rangana Herath to give Australia their fourth blow as they chase 141 to win the second Test. Cowan reviewed the decision which was upheld. He scored 36 (88b, 4X4). His departure brought first innings centurion Matthew Wade to the crease

Australia are chasing 141 runs to win the Sydney Test. This Test is also Michael Hussey’s final international appearance.

Earlier, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 278 runs in their second dig finishing with a lead of 140 runs thanks largely to Dinesh Chandimal and his 10th-wicket stand with Nuwan Pradeep. Chandimal was unbeaten on 62 and added 41 runs for the final wicket to take the lead past 100 runs.
